Katie Melbourne is a systems engineer on the James Webb Space Telescope commissioning team at Ball Aerospace. She started at Ball as a Brooke Owens Fellow and Strategic Operations intern and also worked on the Roman Space Telescope requirements team before her current role. Graduating from Yale University with a Bachelor of Science in Astrophysics in December 2019, Katie has extensive observational astronomy research experience studying stellar activity and spent summers doing research at NASA Goddard and the University of Chile in Santiago. In addition to research, she is interested in space policy, and took a semester off during undergrad to intern at the NASA Headquarters Office of International and Interagency Relations. Her long-term career goals include pursuing a graduate degree in aerospace engineering to study Space Domain Awareness and contribute to space sustainability policy development. In her free time, Katie participates in STEM outreach, trains for ultramarathons, plays guitar, and often looks for new camping and stargazing spots throughout Colorado.
